The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has completed major reclamation works under the first phase of the Tuas Port Project. A joint venture (JV) comprising Dredging International Asia Pacific Private Limited (DIAP) and Daelim Industrial Company Limited (DL Holdings) have completed Phase 1 of the project, which began in 2015.
The first phase involved the construction of a new port terminal with over 20 deep-water berths and a total capacity of 20 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) annually. It also included the construction of an 8.6 km quay wall, as well as the dredging of the fairway and basins and the reclamation of 294 acres of additional land.
The Tuas Next-Generation Port project, which will be built in four phases, is estimated to cost more than USD20 billion. The Tuas Terminal Project is intended to increase the port capacity to meet industry demand in the long term. The second phase of construction has already commenced, with work starting in July 2019. A JV between Penta-Ocean Construction Company Limited/Hyundai Engineering & Construction Company Limited/Boskalis International BV (PHB) was awarded the contract for Phase 2 of the project. By the 2040s, all container operations in Singapore will be centralised at Tuas Terminal, which will be able to accommodate up to 65 million TEUs per year.
