The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) of Thailand has announced that it will not develop any new wind and solar power during 2022, due to a shortage of input facilities to transfer renewable energy (RE) to the national grid. Furthermore, as the number of RE projects in operation grows, the problem of real-time power system stabilisation has posed an issue.

In 2022, total electricity generated and imported, including rooftop solar power production, has been forecasted to reach up to 275.5 billion kWh, up 7.9 per cent from 2021 levels. On the other hand, total hydropower output is expected to reach 82.5 billion kWh in 2022, up 3.8 billion kWh from 2021 levels. Upto 3,407 MW of traditional power sources are expected to be operational during 2022, including thermal power plants with a capacity of 600MW each, including the Song Hau 1 and Nghi Son 2 projects.
