A multinational joint venture involving firms from Myanmar, India, and Singapore will build a 500 MW coal-fired power plant at Kyauktan in the Yangon region. Under an MoU, signed between Myanmar’s Ministry of Electric Power, Orange Powergen Private Limited of India, Global Adviser Pte Ltd of Singapore, and local Diamond Palace Services Company Limited, the project will be implemented on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis. Upon its completion, the plant will increase its supply of electricity to the Yangon region. In 2012, the Myanmar government launched two gas-fired power projects to generate 500 MW and 120 MW for Yangon’s Ahlone and Thakayta townships under respective MoUs with multinational companies from South Korea, Thailand, and Singapore.
