Japan-based Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) has secured a PHP62 million contract from the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to deliver the integrated railway systems and trackwork for the Metro Manila Subway in the Philippines. MC will undertake the designing, manufacturing, installing and delivering of all the systems on the subway line. Work on the tracks is expected to be completed in 2028.

The Manila Metro Subway project is being funded by an ODA1 loan from the Government of Japan’s Special Terms for Economic Partnership (STEP) programme, which is administered by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

As of January 2022, works on the subway project is 25.09 per cent completed. The 36 km subway will be the Philippines’ first entirely underground rail network and will connect the Valenzuela Depot to Pasay City’s NAIA Terminal 3 and the FTI station. During the first years of operation, the line is expected to serve 370,000 passengers per day.
