Philippines-based power distributor Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is likely to complete the pilot technical testing of its prepaid retail electricity service in Angono, Rizal, by mid-2013. Prepaid electricity will allow residential customers to manage their consumption according to their income. Currently, the programme covers around 200 households in Angono, with an average monthly consumption of 200 kWh a month. Further, depending upon the pilot’s success, the service will later be expanded to 2,000 households across Taytay, Binangonan, and Pasig. Thereafter, Meralco will launch its services commercially once it receives approval from the Energy Regulatory Commission. The company has allocated $7 million for the entire prepaid retail electric service system.
