In a bid to generate electricity that will be competitive in price to that of coal-fired power, the power generation arm of the Manila Electric Company (Meralco), MeralcoPowerGen Corporation, is planning to develop wind power projects with a total capacity of 300 MW. Reportedly, MeralcoPowerGen has been in discussions with a couple of developers for wind projects which the company believes can be competitive with coal-based plants. The company plans to develop one wind power project in the north and another closer to Manila within Meralco’s franchise area. One among these projects will be pursued in the short term.
