Manila Electric Company (Meralco), through its power generation subsidiary MGEN, has signed a memorandum of agreement with Vietnam-based VinEnergo to jointly explore the development of an integrated renewable energy portfolio with a potential capacity of up to 25 GW in the Philippines. The collaboration will assess large-scale renewable power generation, energy storage systems and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure to support the country’s long-term energy transition.
The study will evaluate the technical and commercial feasibility of deploying utility-scale renewable energy projects integrated with battery energy storage systems (BESS) across suitable locations in the Philippines. The partnership will also examine the rollout of EV charging infrastructure to complement the country’s growing electric mobility sector. The initiative forms part of both companies’ efforts to accelerate clean energy deployment while strengthening grid reliability and supporting future electricity demand.
If implemented, the proposed programme would rank among the largest renewable energy initiatives in Southeast Asia. The collaboration is expected to support the Philippines’ renewable energy targets, improve energy security, reduce carbon emissions and encourage greater investment in clean energy infrastructure, while further strengthening energy cooperation between the Philippines and Vietnam.
