The construction of a waste-to-energy (WtE) plant at the Sungai Udang Sanitary Landfill in Melaka in Malaysia is set to begin by the mid of 2025. The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) has completed all project implementation procedures, including budget approval. The project is currently under review at the Public-Private Partnership Unit (UKAS) in the Prime Minister’s Department. The federal government has allocated funds, and a contractor has been appointed, though bureaucratic delays have slowed the process.

Alongside the WtE plant, the state is investing over RM40 million in a new disposal cell at the landfill for construction, industrial, commercial, and institutional waste. Plans are also in place to convert the landfill into an Integrated Waste Management Facility for Melaka. According to Southern Waste Management (SWM) Melaka, 245,370.54 tonnes of waste were processed at the landfill by December 2024. Rais urged residents to support recycling programs, noting that 111.75 tonnes of recyclables have been collected through the MBMB’s You Recycle, We Pay initiative since 2023.
