The Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced the upgradation of telecom services in Langkawi, as the archipelago is set to host the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit in 2015. MCMC will implement several projects including the installation of about 1,000 telecom towers costing RM 1.5 billion. Further, telecom facilities are likely to be upgraded to support 3G and 4G technology standards; currently, Langkawi, with the exception of the international airport, has a 2G network.
