The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Malaysia’s telecommunications regulator, is planning to charge a fee for broadband usage under the Wireless Village initiative. The initiative, which began in 2010, provides collective internet access to villages with low broadband coverage. Currently, the services are being offered free. However, MCMC is likely to charge a nominal monthly fee, ranging from RM 5 to RM 10 per month, from 2013 or early 2014 onwards, which will primarily cover the maintenance costs of broadband networks.
