The Government of Malaysia will convert the Pulau Redang and Pulau Perhentian islands into the country’s first green energy islands where 24-hour low-carbon electricity will be supplied by 2025. This move is expected to offset about 70 per cent of the two island’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Additionally, the government is also developing a national Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) framework with a focus on renewing Malaysia’s electricity supply system. Approval has been granted to reallocate renewable energy (RE) quotas for 1,200 MW of solar projects.

Option of a Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) will also be considered for green electricity supply to corporation, starting in the fourth quarter of 2022, with a quota offer of 600 MW.
