The Government of Malaysia is targeting the deployment of Level 3 autonomous driving capability by 2030 as part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s future mobility and automotive technology ecosystem.

Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry stated that the government wants industry players to begin preparing for the transition towards autonomous vehicles, including developing local capabilities in semiconductor chips, sensors and software linked to autonomous driving systems.

Malaysia plans to involve the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute in advancing the initiative and supporting ecosystem development. According to SAE International standards referenced during the event, Level 3 automation allows vehicles to handle driving operations under certain conditions while requiring drivers to remain ready to intervene when necessary.
