The Government of Malaysia is studying the possibility of extending the planned Trans-Borneo Railway beyond domestic routes to Brunei and Kalimantan, Indonesia, with a long-term vision of creating a rail loop around the entire island.

The project, part of the 13th Malaysia Plan, is currently under feasibility study. A 12-month review, launched in June 2025 under the 12th Malaysia Plan with MYR7 million in funding, is being undertaken by a local consultancy. The study will cover technical and operational aspects, socio-economic benefits, governance, and phased implementation. Transport Minister Anthony Loke has confirmed that findings are expected by the third quarter of 2026. If implemented, the Trans-Borneo Railway — with an estimated cost of MYR63.3 billion — would become one of Southeast Asia’s largest cross-border transport projects.
