Dr. Ma. Josefina P. Abilay has won the Benita and Catalino Yap Foundation (BCYF) Innovation Award (BIA) in the government service category. She secured this win due to her works as the regional director of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Mimaropa in bringing innovative water technology solutions to the region.
Under Abilay’s leadership, DOST-Mimaropa deployed water technologies in the geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA) to address the issues of water scarcity. Some of the water technologies include solar-powered water pumps, purification and filtration systems, rainwater harvesting and filtration system, and water desalination system. There are plans to extend the current programme to other GIDA regions in the Philippines.
The BIA honour organisations and individuals that have made contributions through innovations in government service, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), education, technology, and industry. It’s part of BCYF’s Comprehensive Social Development Program.
