Malaysia-based Leader Energy Group Berhad has commenced construction of a 100-MW/400-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Pajam, Negeri Sembilan, with commissioning scheduled for 2027. The project is being developed under Malaysia’s Battery Energy Storage System bidding programme (MyBeST) and is expected to improve electricity grid flexibility in Peninsular Malaysia by supporting renewable energy integration and balancing fluctuations in electricity supply and demand.

Administered by Malaysia’s Energy Commission, MyBeST comprises four grid-connected BESS projects, each with 100 MW of power capacity and 400 MWh of storage capacity. Collectively, the projects will provide 400 MW/1,600 MWh of storage capacity. The programme aims to reduce reliance on fossil-fuel peaking plants, lower electricity system costs over time and support the National Energy Transition Roadmap’s target of achieving 70 per cent renewable energy capacity by 2050.
