Laos and Thailand plan to develop the sixth bridge across the Mekong river to connect Saravane province in Laos and Ubon Ratchathani province in Thailand. Currently, there are four bridges traversing the Mekong River, which link Laos to Thailand: Vientiane–Nongkhai, Savannakhet–Mukdahane, Khammouane–Nakhone Phanom, and Houaysay–Xiengkong. Further, construction work on a new bridge between the Bolikhamxay province in Laos and Beungkarn Province in Thailand is under way.
