The Governments of Laos and Myanmar have signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to undertake a feasibility study for a proposed 2,790 MW hydropower project on the Mekong River along the Laos–Myanmar border.

The agreement was signed between Phongsupthavy Sole Co., Ltd. (Laos) and Primus (Myanmar) and witnessed by senior government officials from both countries. The feasibility study is expected to be completed within 34 months.

The proposed hydropower project aims to strengthen energy security, meet rising electricity demand in both countries, and support ASEAN’s renewable energy and regional power connectivity objectives.

The initiative also reinforces bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, promoting sustainable hydropower development, cross-border infrastructure collaboration and long-term economic integration between Laos and Myanmar.
