The Ministry of Communication and Information (KemKominfo) has started the nationwide process of refarming 2.3GHz spectrum in order to improve service quality and prepare for the deployment of 5G in Indonesia. The refarming process is scheduled to be completed during September 2021.

KemKominfo will lead the project in collaboration with domestic carriers who secured 2.3GHz spectrum in an April 2021 auction. Among them are PT Telekomunikasi Selular (Telkomsel) who received two 10MHz blocks for IDR176.9 billion and Smart Telecom (Smartfren) won the third available block for IDR176.5 billion.

PT Berca Hardayaperkasa (Hinet), a broadband wireless access (BWA) operator, will also take part in the process since it also offers services using the 2.3GHz spectrum. Starting in the Riau Islands, refarming will be carried out throughout nine geographical clusters throughout Indonesia.
