The Kelantan Government has proposed rerouting the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) from Kota Bharu to Rantau Panjang in Pasir Mas instead of the originally planned Tumpat terminus. The proposal, currently under review by Malaysia Rail Link (MRL) and the Ministry of Transport, aims to support renewed Malaysia–Thailand efforts to restore the Pasir Mas–Sungai Golok railway link under KTMB.

To maximise economic gains, the state is pursuing development projects around ECRL stations. These include a cargo-oriented hub at Pasir Puteh and a transit-oriented township at Tunjong, targeting job creation, investment, and improved mobility. The ECRL is expected to be completed by end-2026, with the Kota Bharu–Gombak line operational by January 2027.
