The Kelana Jaya Light Rail Transit (LRT) line will receive 26 new train sets by 2028 to enhance service reliability and strengthen fleet resilience. Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the procurement is funded under a MYR1 billion allocation in the 2026 federal budget. The new rolling stock will support operations on the ageing Bombardier 818 series trains currently in service.
The trains will be supplied by China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC), which operates a manufacturing facility in Batu Gajah, Perak. The procurement follows the entry into service of previously ordered additional train sets last year and is intended to reduce service disruptions and improve operational stability.
The announcement comes after recent service interruptions on the Kelana Jaya line. Authorities have directed Prasarana Malaysia Bhd to strengthen preventive maintenance measures, accelerate spare parts procurement and improve passenger communications.
