The Government of Malaysia and Thailand have announced plans to set up a joint special committee to assess the planning, route and other technical aspects of the proposed Bangkok-Kuala Lumpur High-Speed Rail (HSR) project. The committee will be headed by the secretary-general of Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport (MoT) and the permanent secretary of Thailand’s MoT.
In January 2021, the HSR project had been cancelled after both countries failed to reach an agreement on proposed changes. However, there were plans to revive the HSR line in early-2022. A feasibility study for the HSR route between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok was approved by the governments of the two countries in February 2022.
