The Jakarta Provincial Government has launched EMV contactless fare payments on the MRT Jakarta network, enabling passengers to pay fares directly using contactless credit cards. The new system, which supports Visa and Mastercard, is the first implementation of contactless bank card payments on a public transport system in Indonesia and is intended to improve convenience for both residents and international visitors.
The contactless payment system forms part of Jakarta’s broader strategy to modernise and integrate its public transport network. The city plans to expand the EMV payment system to other modes of transport, including LRT Jakarta, Transjakarta, and Transjabodetabek, allowing passengers to use a single payment method across multiple services. The initiative has been implemented through a collaboration involving the Jakarta Provincial Government, Bank Indonesia, PT MRT Jakarta, Bank Mandiri, Visa, Mastercard, and several national banks.
Alongside the payment system rollout, Jakarta is continuing to expand its rail network. The 12.2 km Pegangsaan Dua–Manggarai LRT line, comprising 11 stations, is scheduled to open in August 2026, with an end-to-end journey time of approximately 28 minutes. The city also plans to extend the line to Dukuh Atas, while construction of a new pedestrian deck is underway to improve connectivity between Jakarta’s public transport hubs.
