The Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) has announced plans to begin construction on the Iskandar Rapid Transit (IRT), which will connect the transport hubs of Iskandar Malaysia, Double Tracking Rail (EDT Gemas-Johor Baru), Senai Airport, Rapid Transit System, Larkin Sentral and Puteri Harbour in Malaysia.
Perception surveys will be conducted before work starts in mid 2022 to assess the public’s awareness of the new public transit system. The agency expects the first phase of the IRT to be opened to traffic in 2024. The IRT will be able to connect 55 feeder lines and 44 direct connections once it is fully operational, with the primary route including 28 stops.
The IRT project is part of the local government unit of Iskandar Malaysia’s aim to achieve complete urbanisation by 2025. The government expects the project to provide the residents with a more convenient, dependable, safe, and frequent mode of transportation.
