The Government of Indonesia has set a goal to achieve energy self-sufficiency by 2029, with outlining a strategy focused on large-scale electrification and renewable energy expansion.

The plan includes a 100 GW power generation programme to rapidly increase domestic capacity and reduce reliance on energy imports. The government also aims to phase out fuel imports within the next two to three years, while decommissioning 13 diesel power plants as part of the transition.

Key measures include accelerating renewable energy deployment, promoting electric vehicles and expanding biofuel production. Initiatives such as converting palm oil and used cooking oil into aviation fuel, alongside biodiesel and bioethanol production, are expected to play a central role in diversifying the energy mix.

The reforms are designed to strengthen national energy security, reduce exposure to global energy volatility and support long-term economic growth. The strategy reflects Indonesia’s broader push toward a more sustainable and self-reliant energy system.
