The Government of Indonesia is advancing the feasibility study for the proposed 780-km Jakarta–Surabaya high-speed rail line. The study will focus on comprehensive planning, sustainable financing, and equitable development along the route. Once complete, the line is expected to reduce travel time between Jakarta and Surabaya to 3.5 hours, compared with the current 11 hours by conventional train.
The project follows the launch of the 142-km Jakarta–Bandung high-speed rail in 2023, which was built in partnership with China but faced cost overruns and left a sizeable debt burden. For the new line, Indonesia is reviewing funding options, including state budget allocations and alternative financing mechanisms, to ensure long-term financial stability. If realised, the Jakarta–Surabaya corridor would mark a major step toward building an extensive national high-speed rail network.
