The Directorate General of Renewable Energy and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources plans to offer three areas for preliminary and exploration surveys for geothermal energy in 2019. The area has the potential to generate 126 MW. The proposed projects include Pentadio in Gorontalo, Ria-Ria Sipaholon in North Sumatra and Lokop in Aceh with resources to generate 25 MW, 60 MW and 41 MW respectively.

Besides, the ministry also plans to auction five geothermal working areas (WKPs) with a total development plan of 175 MW. The projects include the Lainea WKP in Southeast Sulawesi with resources to generate 66 MW, the Sembalun WKP in NTB with resources to generate 100 MW, the Telaga Ranu WKP in North Maluku with resources to generate 72 MW, along with the WKP Gunung Wilis in East Java with resources to generate 50 MW and the Mount Galunggung WKP in West Java with resources to generate 289 MW. However, the current development plans stand at 20 MW for the Lainea, Sembalun and Gunung Wilis WKPs, 5 MW for the Telaga Ranu WKP and 110 MW for the Mount Galunggung WKP.
