Singapore-based HyalRoute Communications Group (HyalRoute), a fibre infrastructure firm, is investing USD500 million to complete a portion of a fibre internet project in Philippines. Philippines Fibre Optic Cable Network (PFOCN), a subsidiary of HyalRoute, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) for the rollout of the fibre network.
The firm is expecting to instal about 16,000 km of fibre cables by the end of 2021. The entire countrywide fibre network will be completed in stages by 2028. This is part of a nearly decade-long plan to invest over USD3 billion and build a 60,000-km internet backbone across the Philippines.
The new fibre network is expected to help the National Broadband Program and the public Wi-Fi initiative reach areas that are currently unserved or underserved. The company’s fibre network will also help Smart Communications Incorporated and Globe Telecom Incorporated’s expansion of 5G mobile services.
