The Government of Ho Chi Minh City plans to add five metro lines over the next five years, expanding its urban rail network to about 187 km by 2030. The expansion will build on the existing Ben Thanh–Suoi Tien Line and is intended to make the metro the backbone of public transport under a transit-oriented development (TOD) model.
The planned lines include Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh–Tham Luong–Thu Thiem), extensions to Line 1 toward Binh Duong, Phase 1 of Line 6 linking Tan Son Nhat Airport to Phu Huu, and the Thu Thiem–Long Thanh and Ben Thanh–Can Gio routes. Authorities expect metro services to meet 20–30 per cent of travel demand by 2030, rising to 35–50 per cent by 2035. Public funding will play the lead role, supported by special mechanisms to speed up approvals and construction.
