The Government of Vietnam’s Ministry of Construction has presented a proposal to increase the involvement of the private sector in expanding the rail network in the country and to enhance local manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports for rail equipment.
The proposal aims to assign state commissions and contracts to local firms to research, develop, and manufacture railway components. It outlines two focus areas: one for developing standards, products, and training, and another for producing and assembling key equipment such as rails, signalling systems, power supply systems, and rolling stock. Currently, there are 35 companies that are involved in the railway sector, however, a majority of machinery and equipment used for the rail sector is imported.
