The city government of Hanoi has submitted a proposal to deploy low and zero-emission buses throughout the city. The proposal is set for review in early July 2024. Under this plan, Hanoi’s bus fleet will comprise 70 per cent electric buses and 30 per cent compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) buses by 2033. This initiative will involve an investment of over USD1.84 billion. Additionally,  the city government plans to transition to an entirely electric bus fleet starting in 2040.

Moreover, five new bus lines, prioritising clean energy and electric buses, are set to launch in early 2025. The Action Program on Green Energy Conversion and Reduction of Carbon and Methane Emissions from the Transport Sector outlines specific goals: by 2025-2030, all new buses must use green energy, and public transport market share must reach 45-50 per cent. By 2030, at least 50 per cent of vehicles will use green energy, and by 2050, all buses and taxis will be electric or green energy-powered.

The city currently operates 132 subsidized bus lines with over 2,000 buses, including 277 electric and CNG-powered vehicles, which account for 13.6 per cent of the fleet.
