The Government of Hanoi will commence construction of five metro lines on June 22, marking the largest urban rail development programme ever undertaken in the Vietnamese capital. The project forms part of the city’s long-term strategy to expand public transport capacity, reduce traffic congestion, and support sustainable urban development. The simultaneous launch of the five lines represents a shift from individual line development towards coordinated investment in multiple corridors, with all five routes targeted for completion by 2030.
The five metro lines include Line 1 (81 km), connecting Hung Vuong Stadium, Ngoc Hoi, Hanoi Station, Gia Lam and Noi Bai International Airport; Line 2 (56.5 km), linking Noi Bai Airport with the city centre and southern districts; Line 8 (91 km), connecting Hoa Lac High-Tech Park with industrial and logistics zones; Line 10 (43 km), a circular route connecting Co Loa, major ring roads and Times City; and Line 14 (32 km), linking Thang Long Bridge, Ciputra and Ocean Park. The projects are supported by new investment mechanisms that simplify approval procedures and allow land clearance activities to proceed independently, accelerating project implementation.
The metro programme is a key component of Hanoi’s 2021–2030 masterplan, which envisions the development of 18 urban rail lines spanning approximately 979 km. The city aims to complete around 500 km of urban rail by 2035, with the remaining network delivered between 2035 and 2045. Once operational, the new lines will integrate with existing and planned metro corridors, including Lines 3 and 5, creating a comprehensive public transport network designed to support economic growth, transit-oriented development, and the transformation of Hanoi into a greener and more connected metropolitan area.
