The Government of Malaysia is planning new logistics hubs and industrial parks along the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) route to boost regional economic activity. These initiatives will be carried out under the Economic Accelerator Project, which aims to leverage the ECRL as more than just a transport corridor.
According to the government, the project has reached 85 per cent completion as of July 2025, with Phase 1 scheduled to open in January 2027. A major milestone was achieved in July when the Genting tunnel, Southeast Asia’s longest rail tunnel, recorded its breakthrough.
The ECRL is expected to enhance trade flows, generate jobs, and improve living standards in the East Coast region, while strengthening Malaysia’s economic links with China through its partnership with China Communications Construction Company, the project’s main contractor.
