The Government of Thailand has announced plans to construct a railway line connecting Bangkok in Thailand to Vientiane in Laos. The government has also created a panel for the project, which will coordinate with the transport authorities in Laos. It will provide data integration on procurement and cross-border travel as part of the planning process for the line.

According to the plan, the line will span 873 km, and cross the Mekong River at the north-eastern Thai city of Nong Khai and is part of a longer-term strategy to connect Thailand’s railway system with China through the recently opened 1,024 km Kunming-Vientiane line.
