The Government of Philippines is planning to deploy low-carbon, energy-efficient electric vehicles (EVs) in low-carbon cities under a Global Environment Facility (GEF)-7 initiative. The government is working on its “Accelerating Adoption and Scale-up of Electric Mobility for Low-Carbon City Development” initiative in order to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and air pollution caused by mobile transportation. The GEF has provided a grant of USD4.28 million to finance the project with the Government of Philippines contributing USD46.725 million.

The e-mobility project will identify pilot cities to test the feasibility of the electric vehicle (EV) deployment. The four-year project will collect data and statistics on commuter profiles, traffic, past 3-wheeler deployments, and renewable energy generation in order to select the pilot cities. Charging infrastructure and renewable energy installations will be installed in a few experimental cities, primarily in areas with high traffic volumes. The infrastructure that will be deployed will be for private and commercial light transportation.
