The Government of Philippines has recorded an increase in infrastructure spending during August 2021 as a result of the country’s road and transportation projects. Infrastructure and capital investments increased to PHP70.9 billion during August 2021, recording a 60 per cent increase from the PHP44 billion infrastructure spending in August 2020.  This has increased the total infrastructure disbursements by the government to PHP570.4 billion during 2021.

Among the main factors for the increase in infrastructure spending is due to the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) road infrastructure projects. These include the construction, restoration, rehabilitation or improvement of access, bypass and diversion roads, bridges as well as flood mitigation structures and drainage systems.

The implementation of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) of the Philippines’ aviation sector infrastructure projects, particularly the Tacloban, Kalibo, and Bukidnon Airport Projects, was another factor contributing to increased spending during the period. The Philippines’ Department of Budget and Management (DBM) expects the trend in spending to be sustained for the remainder of 2021.
