Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation has sanctioned $224.7 million to fund Surabaya’s tramway project. The line will span 17.4 km from Joyoboyo to Tanjung Perak and is expected to have 36 stations. Initially, the project will start with the construction of 4 km of double tracks from Joyoboyo to Pahlawan Street. The Ministry of Transportation will be responsible for the project’s infrastructure, while PT Kereta Api Indonesia will be the operator of the system. PT Industri Kereta Api will manufacture and supply tramcars. The system plans to deploy an e-money payment system, which will allow passengers to use one card for payment for tram, buses and midivans. The project is financed by multi-year funding arrangements and is scheduled to be completed by 2019.
