Several new fourth generation trains for the Philippines’ Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) have arrived from Mexico and Spain and are scheduled to go into operation in 2022. Delivery for 12 out of the 30 trains have been completed and the trains will undergo assessment and commissioning by Spanish engineers.

These trains will be used to replace the first generation trains used in the entire LRT-1 line by 2022. Some of these trains will also be operational on the Cavite Extension project. Compared to first generation trains, the fourth-generation trains are more efficient, faster and more accessible to people with disabilities.

Along with the new trains, the LRT-1 is also modernising its signalling system, which is expected to reduce the time between trains, from three and a half minutes to two and a half minutes.
