The Jurong Island Desalination Plant has commenced operations in Singapore, making it the fifth operational desalination facility in the country. The new plant is also approximately five per cent more energy efficient than the existing plants. The 3.7-hectare plant has a daily capacity to supply 30 million gallons of fresh drinking water as well as save 5,000 MWh of energy annually.

The Jurong Island Desalination Plant also features modern water-treatment equipment and membrane technologies, including dissolved air flotation, ultra-filtration, and reverse osmosis. Due to an increased level of automation at the plant, only a three-man crew can oversee the entire operation remotely.

The desalination facility, which was built using the Design, Build, Own, and Operate approach, will be operated by a consortium comprising Tuas Power and ST Engineering for a 25-year period.
