Taiwan-based Far Eastern Electronic Toll Collection (FETC) will install electronic toll collection (ETC) system on Thailand’s M6 and M81 highways in partnership with the BGSR joint venture (JV), comprising Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS), Gulf Energy Development Public Company Limited (Gulf), Sino-Thai Engineering & Construction Public Company Limited (STEC), Ratch Group, and the Department of Highways (DOH). BGSR JV will invest THB11 billion to finance the deployment of the smart system on the two highways. This move is expected to promote the construction of intelligent contactless highways in the country.

Under the terms of the agreement with BGSR JV, FETC will support the DOH in promoting the use of the Free-Flow ETC solution. The ETC system has a transaction accuracy of 99.9 per cent and a toll collection success rate of 99.97 per cent.

FETC will complete the implementation of the intelligent Free-Move system in three years, which will combine a traffic management and control system with a tolling system to allow traffic to flow smoothly. A vehicle recognition system based on artificial intelligence (AI) will be used to improve accuracy while reducing labour. The system is expected to commence construction by the end of 2021 and start of commercial operation is scheduled for 2024.
