The Department of Transportation (DOTr) of the Philippines and Cebu Port Authority (CPA) has completed expansion works at Berths 7-10 worth PHP989 million at the Cebu Baseport which is expected to increase vessel traffic, improve cargo-handling capacity and enhance the overall port productivity.

Funding for the port expansion project was provided by CPA’s corporate budget. The project included the construction of a reinforced concrete deck and operation area, a lighting system for the port, development of mooring and docking facilities and gantry crane rails to cater to the anticipated increase in gantry cranes to achieve faster cargo turnaround times.

The entire project has been completed in two phases with works on Phase 1 starting in 2017 with a budget of PHP339 million. Work on this phase was completed in January 2019. Construction on Phase 2 commenced in February 2020 with a budget of PHP600 million and was concluded during October 2021 when the contract with UKC Builders Incorporated was completed.

Additionally, the CPA has also announced plans to commence work on the San Fernando Port Project in January 2022 in Barangay Poblacion, Cebu. The PHP336 million project will be funded by DOTr and will include the demolition of the old port and the construction of a new roll-on/roll-off (roro) facility at Poblacion.
