Ericsson was awarded the “Corporate Social Responsibility Special Recognition Award” by Télécoms Sans Frontières for its work in Myanmar at the Global Carrier Awards. The award recognised the extensive research that Ericsson had undertaken to demonstrate that access to telecom would be beneficial to the people, economy, and society of Myanmar.

Further, in re-establishing its presence in Myanmar in June 2012, Ericsson has asserted that it will collaborate with human rights stakeholders to assess both the human rights situation and the socio-economic impact of telecommunications advances on the country.

According to Ericsson’s study, “Potential Economic Impact of Mobile Communications in Myanmar”, the estimated total economic impact of the mobile sector in the country would be 1.5–7.4 per cent of the GDP within the first three years of the issue of licences. Further, the potential impact of mobile communications on employment was also assessed: the industry could provide full-time employment to approximately 66,000 people in Myanmar. An additional 24,000 full-time jobs are also expected to be created within the wider economy, as a result of their relationships with mobile network operators.
