DIGITAL Nasional Bhd (DNB), a special purpose vehicle (SPV) operated by the Malaysia’s Ministry of Finance, has invited eight global companies to compete in its 5G infrastructure tender. DNB has implemented a strict tender management mechanism to ensure that the proper controls are in place during the process, including a comprehensive set of governance protocols that will be overseen by a tender committee. The bidding process will be completed by the middle of 2021, with the chosen company starting work on the 5G networks shortly thereafter.

The eight companies include  Nokia, Cisco, Ericsson, NEC, FiberHome, Samsung, ZTE and Huawei, and a telecom technology provider in China.

These companies will be required to present their perspectives on the development of Malaysia’s national 5G network, as well as devise end-to-end solutions to meet the country’s 5G requirements. The importance of local representation has also been emphasised. The tender applications will be judged on several essential areas, including technical competency in deploying a national 5G network, ability to combine with major telecommunications networks in the region, creative financing strategies, and capacity to promote local vendor growth.
