Electricity Generating Public Limited Company (Egco), an Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) subsidiary, has announced that it will increase its generation capacity in Thailand to 1GW and has allocated a budget of THB30 billion for 2022 to support this plan. Out of the total capital spending earmarked for the year, THB24 billion will be used to support the agency’s capacity expansion while the remaining THB6 billion will be used to develop new energy-related businesses.

Egco will aim to increase its generation capacity to about 7 GW, from the current capacity of 5.9 GW, which will be generated by 30 power plants, both in operation and under development.

The company is also working on several asset acquisitions, some of which are expected to be finalised by Q3 of 2022. Further details have not been released by Egco.

Other energy projects expected to go online in 2022 includes two new clean power plants including a 650 MW Nam Theun 1 hydroelectric power plant in Laos, as well as an oil pipeline business transporting fuel from Saraburi to Khon Kaen.
