The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) has commenced the operations of a 500 kV high-voltage transmission line from Bang Saphan district in Prachuap Khiri Khan to stations in Surat Thani and Phuket. The transmission line aims to boost power security in the southern region of Thailand by more than doubling power transmission capacity from 700 MW to 1,600 MW annually.
The transmission line will also increase Phuket’s power generation to 1,170 MW and help reduce frequency of power cuts. Due to insufficient power supply, many regions in Thailand’s southern region have regular power outages.
To address this situation, Egta launched a project to draw power from the Central region to supply the southern and western provinces in 2016. Construction of the transmission lines was completed in April 2022.
