The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is planning to hold discussions with power authorities in Cambodia and Myanmar regarding its electricity export to Cambodia and Myanmar with a total capacity of 500 MW. Electricity export to Cambodia is expected to happen quicker than export to Myanmar since some transmission lines have already been developed in Cambodia while Myanmar requires further investment in its power infrastructure. Electricity trade with both countries is expected to commence by 2023, subject to consensus among the energy ministries of the three countries over the trade deal. Once the discussion ends, the countries will study the feasibility of trade in more detail, covering aspects such as power capacity, the location of transmission lines, power tariffs and periods of trade.
