The Department of Transportation (DoTr) of the Philippines has announced that the overhaul and replacement of Metro Rail Transit Line 3’s (MRT-3) light rail vehicles (LRVs) is expected to be completed in 2023. Sumitomo Corporation, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering Limited, and TES Philippines have been contracted to replace all the 72 cars operating on the line. Till date, the companies have already replaced 43 LRVs till date, with the remaining 29 cars scheduled for replacement by April 2023.

The firms will also upgrade mainline tracks, overhaul signalling, communications, and CCTV systems, and restore all escalators and elevators. These improvements are part of a larger project to rehabilitate the rail line along EDSA. Once all rehabilitation work is completed, the MRT-3 line is expected to return to its original high-grade design state.
