The Department of Transportation (DOTr) of the Philippines has received the final set of new train cars for the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT3), completing the upgrade of the line’s rolling stock three months before schedule. With this delivery, all 72 train cars of the MRT have been overhauled, with the line now using 21 train sets compared to the 15 train sets used before.

The new vehicles have a maximum operating speed of 60 km/hr, reducing end-to-end travel time from 1.25 hours to just 45 minutes. Headway has also reduced to four minutes from 9.5 minutes.

The DOTr will initially deploy the new rolling stock during peak hour periods. The MRT3 rehabilitation project commenced in 2019 and was overseen by Sumitomo Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
