The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has commenced construction on the New Cebu International Container Port (NCICP), a major infrastructure project aimed at improving logistics in Cebu and Western Visayas. Set for completion by mid-2028, the facility will relieve congestion at the Cebu Baseport by accommodating two vessels with a combined capacity of 2,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). The NCICP is expected to enhance shipping efficiency, reduce logistics costs, and ultimately lower retail prices in the region.

Funded by a PHP16.93 billion official development assistance loan from South Korea’s Export-Import Bank, the port will be built on a 25-hectare reclamation site in Consolacion, Cebu. It will feature a 500-meter berth, 12-meter water depth, five quay cranes, and a 1,365-meter access road. South Korea-based HJ Shipbuilding and Construction Company Limited was awarded the development contract. South Korean Ambassador Lee Sang-hwa highlighted that the project could strengthen Cebu’s position as a maritime hub in Southeast Asia, attracting further investment.
