The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have partnered to improve road transport in Metro Manila and adjacent areas in the Philippines. The companies signed the Technical Cooperation Project for the Capacity Development of Public Utility Vehicles, which will run until 2027.
JICA will provide capacity development training for the DOTr to support the implementation of road-based public transportation systems. This includes assistance with route planning, improving intermodal facilities, and service level monitoring. The project aims to strengthen road-based public transport capacities and improve the intermodality of transport systems.
JICA’s technical assistance will focus on projects such as the Public Transport Modernisation Program (PTMP), EDSA Busway, Active Transport Program, and EDSA Greenways Projects, all of which are expected to promote public transport use and ease traffic congestion.
