The Department of Transportation (DOTr) reaffirmed its support for the EDSA busway, calling it the most efficient public road transport system in Metro Manila. The busway served over 63 million commuters in 2024 and has already transported more than 5.5 million passengers in January 2025, averaging 177,000 daily riders. The system, which operates 24/7 across 23 stations, remains a key component of the city’s public transport network.
A private sector-led feasibility study is underway to explore improvements to the EDSA busway without exacerbating traffic congestion. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is evaluating a proposal to phase out the busway to expand the Metro Rail Transit (MRT-3) system. MMDA Chair Romando Artes noted that any decision would depend on enhancements such as increased train capacity and reduced waiting times to accommodate displaced commuters.
